Between Village and Town: Small-Town Urbanism in Sub-Saharan Africa

In the next twenty years, urban populations in Africa are expected to double, while land cover could triple. An often-overlooked dimension of this transformation is growth small towns and medium-sized cities. paper, we explore ways which straddling rural life, consider how insights into in-betweenness can contribute our understanding Africa’s transformation. particular, examine urbanism produced expressed places where living emerging but administrative label for such locations still ‘village’. For purpose, draw on case-study material from two Tanzania, comprising both qualitative quantitative data, including analyses photographs maps collected 2010–2018. First, dwindling role agriculture importance farming, businesses services diversification livelihoods. However, income varies substantially among population groups, depending economic migrant status, gender, age. Second, show institutions, buildings, transport infrastructure display dimensions urbanism, planned aspired to. Third, describe well-established middle-aged households, independent women (some whom mothers), young people, mostly single-person explain their visions values towns. conclusion, discuss implications life-in-becoming planning, emphasizing development inclusive local governance. Ultimately, argue that study establishes an important starting point further explorations simultaneous production expression town urbanization.
